Boring Future / Labs · The Probability Bench
Measured, not promised. Test a decision model on real operational work.
Models like Jev answer small business decisions with a probability attached. Before one runs anything on its own, it should be tested on the work it will do. 45 decisions from five workflows, 7 worded several ways, 17 with something added to try to throw it.
Privacy
Your key is yours to use. Never ours to see.
The bench needs your own TypeSafe API key to test Jev. Here is exactly what happens to it, and to everything else you do on this page.
Rather your key never touched a website? The command-line version runs on your machine and writes a Boring Future report. 51 KB, Python 3.11+. Or try the simulator below: no key at all.
- 01
Your key stays in this tab.
It is held in the page’s memory only while a run needs it. It is never written to storage, cookies or the address bar, and it is never sent to our analytics or to Tina. Closing the tab removes it; Forget clears it at once.
- 02
It goes to TypeSafe, and nowhere else.
The key travels only in requests to TypeSafe. The page tries TypeSafe directly first. TypeSafe currently accepts browser requests only from its own console, so when it refuses, the request passes through a small relay on this site that forwards it to TypeSafe and returns the answer.
- 03
The relay keeps nothing.
It doesn’t store or log your key, the questions or the answers. It forwards only to TypeSafe’s decision endpoint and only accepts requests from this page. There is no log or dashboard where anyone here could see a key.
- 04
TypeSafe sees the questions.
What reaches TypeSafe is the bench’s invented example cases, charged to your TypeSafe account under TypeSafe’s own terms. TypeSafe says it doesn’t train Jev on customer requests. No personal information is involved unless you add it.
- 05
Your results stay with you.
Nothing about your run is saved on our side. Download the results if you want to keep them; the file never contains your key. The simulator sends nothing anywhere, unless you ask Tina about your results: then a short summary of them, never your key, goes with your message.
This covers the bench. For the rest of the site, see our privacy notice
Why a bench
Four questions before a model acts on its own.
The same questions we ask of any workflow we build: what could run by itself, what should be prepared for a person, and what must stay with one. The thinking behind it is in Teaching software when to act
- 01
Is it right?
The top answer, against the one a careful person would give, across five kinds of operational work.
- 02
Does it know when it isn’t?
Confidence that matches reality is what lets software decide how much authority to take.
- 03
What could run on its own?
Set the bar for acting alone and see exactly which decisions clear it, and which of those were wrong.
- 04
Will it behave tomorrow?
Same request, same answer. However it’s worded. Whatever else is in the email.
The bench
Choose a model. Add your key. Run it.
Start with jev-latest. Every answer, every variant and every criterion is open to inspect, and you can change the targets after the run without asking again.
Set up a run
TypeSafe · jev-latestKept in this tab’s memory only, and gone when you close it. Never saved, never logged, never seen by us. How it works. No key? Create one at TypeSafe, or try the simulator.
Every case. Open any one to see what arrives, what’s asked and the right answer.

On your own machine
The command-line bench. Same cases, same checks, your terminal.
Your key stays in an environment variable on your computer. Each run writes a Boring Future report: the verdict, the three lanes, every criterion, and every case and variant, expandable. It can also gate a release: the command fails when a must-have criterion does.
- 01
Unzip it, then install it (a virtual environment is best).
pip install . - 02
Put your key in the environment. It never leaves your machine except to TypeSafe.
export TYPESAFE_API_KEY=your-key - 03
Run the bench against Jev.
dpbench run --model jev-latest - 04
Open the Boring Future report it writes.
runs/<run>/report.html
Method
How it’s marked. And what it can’t tell you.
What exactly is graded?
Only things code can check: whether the top answer matches the right one, and how the probabilities behave. No model grades another, and there’s no human scoring.
What do the lanes mean?
They’re how we design workflows. Above the “act alone” bar, a decision would run on its own. Between the bars it would be prepared for a person to approve. Below, a person decides with the context ready. The bench shows how many decisions land in each, and how many of the unchecked ones were wrong.
Why include cases the model is known to be weak at?
TypeSafe’s own documentation says to keep arithmetic and date comparison in code. The bench includes a raw version and a “compute in code” version of the same decision, so you can see why that advice matters.
Is 45 cases enough?
Enough to see how a model behaves and to try the method, not enough to certify one. Calibration in particular needs hundreds of cases before the decimals mean much. For a real workflow we build the case set from your own examples.
What does a run cost?
With the default settings, about 150 requests of a few hundred tokens each. At TypeSafe’s published price that is a small fraction of a penny, charged to your TypeSafe account. The page shows the estimate before you run. The simulator is free and never leaves your browser.
Can I run it on my own machine?
Yes. The command-line bench (Python 3.11 or later) runs the same 45 cases and checks with your key from an environment variable, so it never touches a website, and writes a Boring Future report you can open in any browser.
Why does the simulator exist?
So anyone can try the page without a key. Its answers are made up and deterministic; it knows the right answers and is deliberately imperfect. It says nothing about Jev.
