Is the job done? Two decision models check an engineer’s after photo.

An engineer marks a job done and attaches a photo. Each test sends the work order, the engineer’s note, the before photo and the after photo to a decision model: OpenAI’s gpt-6-luna on the Decisions API, or TypeSafe’s Jev (jev-1.14.0), which reads images in preview. Both get the same question, a three-way choice (close the job, ask for a clearer photo, or a supervisor reviews) and four yes/no questions about the evidence, then a gate calibrated for each model. Jev also draws boxes round the repaired item and the original fault, for checking. The calibration set set the gates; the blind set was held back until now. Every job is synthetic, and nothing here touches a real job system.

The test run

Build a bench. Then run it, one case or all of them.

Pick the sets and the outcomes, then take everything or a seeded shuffle of any size. Each job has up to three after photos: one shows it done, one can’t show it, one shows a problem. Choose a model; each keeps its own results, and once both have run the same cases they appear side by side.

The calibration set isn’t blind. Its cases set gpt-6-luna’s gate, so their score flatters it.

The gate

Two evidence checks act first: nothing usable asks the engineer again, and a problem in the photo sends it to a supervisor. Otherwise a close or ask-again answer only stands if the model is sure enough; below the bar, a supervisor decides.

right where it lands wrong where it landsRun the tests to see the dots.

Calibrated 16 October 2026 for gpt-6-luna on the calibration set (54 cases): 47/54 right, 1 closed in error, 6 needless supervisor reviews. The model’s own choice alone: 48/54 right, 2 closed in error, 4 needless supervisor reviews. Deciding each job with settings fitted without it gives 46/54 right, 1 closed in error, 7 needless supervisor reviews. Minimise 4 × wrong automatic decisions + 1 × needless supervisor reviews; among equally good settings, the middle of the range.

Correct closes scored at least 0.56 and wrong ones at most 0.74 against the 0.45 bar.

Calibration results flatter any system. The blind set, run once, is the honest test; real photos from real jobs come next.

The cases

Every job on the bench. And the lane a careful supervisor would choose.

Each card is one work order with its before and after photos, gpt-6-luna’s decision and, once it has run the case too, the other model’s. Open a card to see the photos large, with Jev’s boxes on both.

The question, exactly as sent

One POST /v1/decisions per test, model gpt-6-luna. The input is one user message: the work order and the engineer’s note as text, then the before photo, then the after photo, each as an inline base64 data URL. Then five questions about the two photos: the choice, and four yes/no questions about the evidence.

How an answer becomes a decision

The API returns the chosen lane with a probability for each of the three and a confidence, and a probability for each evidence question. Two of those act outright: if nothing in the after photo can be made out, the engineer is asked again; if it clearly shows a problem, a supervisor looks. Otherwise a close or ask-again answer stands only if its confidence clears that lane’s bar, and goes to a supervisor if not. A supervisor answer always stands. So does every refusal of any question, error, timeout or malformed answer: each goes to a supervisor, never a guess. Rate limits and server errors are retried twice with backoff first. Jev answers in its own shape; it is converted and held to exactly the same checks. Each model has its own gate, because one model’s confidence of 0.6 isn’t another’s.

What it costs

gpt-6-luna is billed on input tokens only, at US$0.10 per million; output is free (Decisions API public beta, October 2026). A test here is about 3,251 tokens, mostly the photos, so about $0.00033 each, or $0.325 per thousand jobs. Estimates use each response’s own token count and leave out regional-processing premiums.

What this can’t tell you

Every photo is synthetic: made with GPT Image 2.5 (before photos generated, after photos edited from them) or degraded in code on purpose, never a real building. A hundred cases are enough to see how a model behaves and to try the gate, not to certify it. Real photos from real jobs, with some held back from the fitting, are the next step before anything closes a job on its own.

Keys and what’s kept

The OpenAI and TypeSafe keys live only in the server’s environment; the page never sees them. Only this page’s own jobs can be sent, from this site, with a limit per connection. Nothing is logged or stored on our side; your results stay in this browser until you clear them.

  • Close the Job

The after photo clearly shows the same item and place as the before photo, close enough and clear enough to check, and the reported fault is plainly gone: no new damage, nothing left half done, nothing else fixed instead.
